Up until recently the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings and this can lead to changes in genes or even whole genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which explains the process that allows those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantageous characteristics. This differing reproduction may eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The word "evolution" comes from the Latin word"evolution" which means unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings as it has taken form in the sciences and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term transmutation was coined by Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

In recent years evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. In time, this genetic variability can cause the emergence of completely new physical or biological traits in the same population. This variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. However non-genetic changes like increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution since they're not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the notion that the theory is controversial to argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from textbooks for high school, including the removal of references to the evolutionary history of humans and the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestral bird's parent.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe the Bible is God's word and should be believed to be true. While Creationists may not all be Christian but they are a majority. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most well-known kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true and that the universe and the life on Earth began only recently.

OECs are not as well-known However, they are just as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both kinds of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life came to be on Earth. They claim that evolution is impossible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the founders of modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Eventually, these evolutionary changes will create new species that are similar to the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were all created at the same time, and that they grew slowly afterward. In general, the creationists oppose teaching evolution in schools. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they will remove the mention of evolution in their editions. A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the bird, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its mission is to cut out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons aren't certain, but could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of creation scientists in the US.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and a book. One of them was an educational textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. It sparked interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6-7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
